This proposal relates to time purchased by the Chinese Academy of Sciences for Parkes follow-up confirmation and timing of FAST discoveries. As the observing time has been purchased this proposal (an... more d the related PX500) does not require TAC grading. The primary reason for submitting a proposal is to ensure an outreach statement and that the proposal is entered into OPAL for the data archive to access. The Chinese team have two time requests. The time scheduled for the first (PX500) will be allocated in blocks of 24 hours and the data will become available in the data archive with an 18 month embargo period. The second type of time (relating to this proposal) will be scheduled in shorter blocks and the data archived with a 10 year embargo.less

Superradiance (SA) is a well known phenomenon of coherent emission. The first claim of detection of SA in an astronomical setting was made as late as 2016, with new claimed detections in 2019, all on ... more ~100 days' time scale. We propose this exploratory, program to try to identify SA on much shorter time scale in three targets containing strong OH masers. Our key advantages include the unique capability of Parkes UWB in recording OH and CH lines simultaneously and our innovative scheme in calibrating flux as quickly as a fraction of a second. Our goal is to seek correlated flux variation of both OH and CH masing transitions at both short (~s) and long (~3 months) time scales and use HI as a check on the gain. It would be a major discovery if we could detect SA. Otherwise, the proposed observation will still help constrain the excitation conditions of OH an CH ?-doubling transitions, the latter of which has seen much less published masing activities.less

The Parkes Ultra-wide-bandwidth receiver (UWL) has enabled, for the first time with the Parkes telescope, a commensal high time and high frequency resolution survey. As part of the 2020APRS semester, ... more we have been able to demonstrate the viability of this technique through observations of the region of the Galaxy known as "Baade's Window", in which we are guaranteed detections of pulsars and spectral lines. Our science drivers are diverse and range from understanding scattering, to detecting new pulsars, to searching for galaxies in the zone of avoidance, probing the globular cluster at the centre of the window and studying OH circumstellar masers and CO-dark molecular gas. For the 2020OCTS semester, we propose to repeat the initial survey after an interval of 6 months. This is intended to allow for the confirmation of any newly discovered pulsars and spectral detections, and to provide a means of discriminating new spectral features from background interference by measuring their Doppler shift over the Earth's orbit. The observing strategy and processing software developed for this survey will be applicable to all future Parkes surveys with the UWL or the future cyrogenically-cooled phased array feed (CryoPAF).less

The Galactic Center (GC) is a key target for the radio component of Breakthrough Listen (BL) program. Offering the largest amount of stars in any given direction in the sky, the GC is widely cited as ... more a location believed to harbour advanced civilizations, and it is also the most energetic region in the Milky Way. We aim to conduct BL-GC Survey with Parkes radio telescope for around 350 hours. We will cover the frequency range from 700 MHz to 4 GHz, utilizing the newly installed ultra-wideband receiver. Our team has already leveraged both standard and bespoke tools to construct a flexible software stack to search data for signals of interest. We will look for signals from extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) by searching for both simple narrow-band signals and complex modulated signals. Along with that, as an ancillary science, we will also search for accelerated pulsars — likely orbiting a supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy. Data products produced during this program will also be publically available to engage larger pulsar communityless
