Parkes observations for project P511 semester 2007APRS
We request continuing timing and monitoring observations of 7 rotating radio transients. These sources are rotating neutron stars which are detectable only through their sporadic radio bursts. The observations proposed here are crucial for understanding the emission mechanism of these sources and for determining how they relate to other neutron sta... morer populations. Through monthly observations, we aim to maintain the phase-connected timing solutions achieved during the last observing semester, further contrain burst flux distributions and spectral indices, and search for any new and unexpected bursting and/or glitching phenomena. These observations are the cornerstone of an extensive campaign at X-ray, radio and infrared wavelengths. less

P511 - Further Investigations into a New Class of Radio Transients
Neutron stars are of interest to a broad range of astronomers and physicists. They can be used to probe equations of state of superdense matter, to study plasma and particle physics, and to test theories of general relativity and even cosmology. We have found an entirely new class of these objects which are radio emitters for less than 1 second a d... moreay! Understanding how these objects emit is very important for neutron star astrophysics and has huge implications for the total number of such stars in our Galaxy. We expect many more of these objects to be found by large field of view instruments such as LOFAR and the SKA. less
