Managed aquifer recharge opportunity mapping in the Fitzroy, Darwin and Mitchell catchments generated by the Northern Australia Water Resource Assessment
The regional-scale MAR opportunity assessment represents a pre-feasibility assessment and consists of two components: (i) regional-scale opportunity mapping and (ii) MAR guidelines for entry level assessment in the most promising area for MAR. This pre-feasibility assessment identifies promising areas for MAR and describes the nature of investigati... moreons required to provide data that would support a feasibility assessment of a specific MAR scheme. The key output of the MAR regional-scale opportunity assessment is a series of regional-scale MAR opportunity maps for each of the three study areas to identify the most promising locations for MAR. less

regional scale assessment
This assessment of MAR opportunities in surficial aquifers to support agricultural development in Northern Australia identified areas based on characteristics of the surficial geology, topography, and gridded estimates of regolith thickness and soil permeability. Areas that met the constraint criteria (suitable geology, slope <10%, regolith thickness >10m, permeability >0.05 m/d) were categorised according to slope and soil permeability. A range of data sources were used across the three catchment regions as detailed in Table 4-2 in Section 4 of the project technical report that also describes the analysis methods in detail:

A technical report to the Australian Government from the CSIRO Northern Australia Water Resource Assessment, part of the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund: Water Resource Assessments. CSIRO, Australia.
The Australian Government commissioned CSIRO to complete the Northern Australia Water Resource Assessment (NAWRA) - an initiative of the Australian Government’s White Paper on Developing Northern Australia and the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper, the government’s plan for stronger farmers and a stronger economy. Aspects of the Assessment were undertaken in conjunction with the Northern Territory Government, the Western Australian Government, and the Queensland Government.
