Parkes observations for project P1031 semester 2019OCTS_02
We propose to study the pulsar emission mechanism using novel statistical methods that enable us to study the dynamics of the radio pulsar signal on short time scales (e.g. quasi-periodic sub-pulse structure, transitions between orthogonally polarized modes of emission, nulling, etc.) without needing to detect individual pulses. This pilot study w... moreill pave the way for a large-scale survey of dynamic/transient emission properties over a broad range of the pulsar population. less

P1031 - A pilot study to demonstrate novel radio pulsar emission analysis techniques
Pulsars emit light-house like beams of radio waves that sweep across the Galaxy with each rotation of the star. Unlike a steady search beam, the pulsar beam crackles and pops with lightning-like discharges of energy. By studying these discharges, we learn more about what generates the pulsar signal and the physics of the turbulent plasma in the p... moreulsar's strong magnetic field. We have developed new techniques that enable us to study the signals of the weakest pulsars that have been overlooked to date and we are testing out these methods using a cutting-edge receiver at The Dish. less
