Parkes observations for project P880 semester 2016OCTS_BPSR_01
XSS J1227-4859 is the second "Transitional" pulsar binary system discovered in the galactic field. We plan to continue our campaign of observations at 20cm with the aims of: (i) discriminating the various proposed mechanisms responsible for the orbital variations seen in the system; (ii) keeping the phase coherence of the timing solution ... morein order to investigate the nature of the gamma-ray emission from the binary; (iii) determining the critical X-ray luminosity above which the pulsed radio emission disappears; (iv) constraining the geometry of the emission from the system in the radio, X-ray and gamma-ray bands through (quasi) simultaneous multiwavelength observations.. less

P880 - Investigating the "transitional'' binary pulsar XSS J12270-4859
According to the "recycling scenario'', the millisecond radio pulsars (i.e. rapidly spinning neutron stars, experiencing tens or hundreds of rotations per second) result from the transfer of matter and of angular momentum from a mass losing companion in a binary system. In particular, it is predicted that the companion star spins up an old neutron... more star during a a long phase in which the binary shines as a bright X-ray binary. When accretion halts, the X-ray luminosity of the binary fades, and the neutron star starts emitting radio pulses at the very rapid pace of rotation of the neutron star.
Despite the recycling mechanism was proposed more than 30 years ago, only during the 2013 it was possible to finally catch a binary system in the act of switching from the X-ray accretion phase to the radio emission phase. On February 2014 a second similar binary, dubbed XSS J1227-4859, was discovered. The latter is the target of the present project, which aims to use this "transitional'' binary pulsar as a laboratory for investigating few still obscure physical processes occurring during the final stages of the aforementioned "recycling". less
