Information model for vegetation site data
The Essential Environmental Measures for Australia programme aims to improve our capacity to track trends in the state of the environment by bringing stakeholders together to deliver meaningful information and discoverable, accessible and re-usable data on a set of Essential Environmental Measures. More i... morenformation about the programme can be found at: https://environment.gov.au/science/essential-environmental-measures-australia
As part of the Essential Environmental Measures for Australia programme the Department has established a working group with stakeholders from across Australia, including representatives from the Australian Government, state and territory governments, and research facilities. This group is known as the Working Group for the Development of a National Information Model and Data Exchange Protocol for Vegetation Site Data (the Working Group).
There are many collectors and holders of vegetation site data across Australia. Currently much of these data are difficult and time consuming for users to access and re-use. Differences in the elements captured, and in the way data are structured and described make it difficult for users, including the Australian Government Department of the Environment, to understand data and sensibly aggregate data from multiple sources.
An information model documents a formalised, shared understanding of data and will enable data collected by different state, territory and other agencies to be more readily collated to form a national picture. It will enable more efficient re-use of the data within state-of-the-art web information services and significantly improve the accessibility of vegetation information, enabling the most up-to-date vegetation information to be more readily collated. less
